The Kurrajongs

January 2006 was the 90th anniversary of the departure from Inverell of the World War I recruits known as The Kurrajongs.

The first contingent of 112 Kurrajongs was the largest group of recruits to leave a country town for service in World War I. The second contingent of 47 men left Inverell in February 1916. Most of these men - who served with the 33rd Battalion - left Australia on the ship Marathon.

Prior to the departure of the Kurrajongs, over 600 men from the Inverell district had already enlisted for the War.

Some time after the War the Inverell Municipal Council decided to plant a kurrajong tree for all those men from the district who lost their lives whether or not they were one of the Kurrajongs.

Today, Inverell proudly recognises the sacrifice these men made through the new Memorial built in the park near the Avenue of Remembrance trees on the Glen Innes Road.

Can you help us?

  • Was your ancestor one of the 1916 recruits known as The Kurrajongs?
  • Do you have any letters, photographs, badges, stories or documents about The Kurrajongs?

If so, we would very much like to hear from you.
